In a powerful display of youth-driven compassion and global unity, the UAE has hosted the first-ever Operation Smile MENA Student Conference. Over 130 students from 15 countries gathered in Abu Dhabi to learn, connect, and commit to transforming lives—one smile at a time. The event wasn't just symbolic; it marked a new chapter in youth-led humanitarian action in the region.
The room buzzed with energy—teenagers in crisp white polos, their lanyards swinging, eyes wide with anticipation. Flags from across the Middle East and North Africa lined the conference hall in Abu Dhabi, but it wasn't politics or business they came to discuss. It was hope. Hope in the form of a smile.
More than 130 students from 15 countries had arrived for the first-ever Operation Smile MENA Student Conference, hosted in the UAE. Some came from as far as Morocco and Egypt, others from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Jordan. All of them united by one mission: to change lives through the power of reconstructive surgery and youth-led advocacy.
“I never thought I could make a real difference at 17,” said Sara, a student from Kuwait, her voice trembling with excitement. “But being here, surrounded by people my age who care just as much—it’s life-changing.”
For many, this was more than a conference. It was a call to action. Workshops covered everything from surgical procedures for cleft lips and palates to fundraising techniques and community outreach. Students brainstormed campaigns, shared emotional stories of patients they’d met, and even took part in simulation labs led by volunteer medical professionals.
“These young people are the heartbeat of our mission,” said Kathy Magee, Co-Founder and President of Operation Smile, who attended the event. “They carry the message of dignity and empathy into their schools, their communities, and beyond.”
In a region often portrayed through the lens of conflict and hardship, the conference painted a different picture—one of unity, empathy, and youth leadership. It was the first time such a student-focused event was held in the MENA region, and the UAE stepped forward as a proud host, underlining its commitment to global humanitarian efforts.
The conference was held under the theme “Leading with Impact”. And impact there was. From creative awareness campaigns to cross-border collaborations, students left with action plans and hearts full of purpose.
Hosting international humanitarian events like this one further positions Abu Dhabi as a hub of global connectivity and soft power. For investors and real estate stakeholders, it signals more than just hospitality. Events that attract global youth and NGOs elevate the city's international profile, driving demand for short-term accommodations, event infrastructure, and educational facilities.
In the long run, cities that invest in purpose-driven events create environments where families, educators, and investors feel aligned—not just economically, but ethically.
